Housing

Commissioner McCarty recognizes the critical need for more housing in DC, especially targeted and affordable housing. His dedication to addressing homelessness, supporting pathways to homeownership, and increasing housing inventory and density means we've approved over 94 housing units in ANC 2G during the 2022-2024 term.

Increasing Inventory and Density

Shepherd Court in ANC 2G04 is one of the most densely populated blocks in the area, yet our historic communities in Blagden Alley and Naylor Court have an exciting opportunity for thoughtful growth. By supporting new developments that fill existing gaps, we can increase housing density while preserving the unique charm and history of our neighborhood. Drawing from a phrase often shared among neighbors, Commissioner Steven McCarty is working toward “status grow.” He believes we can honor our history, create new homes, and welcome more neighbors to the vibrant community we love.

Supporting Affordable Housing

Steven was proud to support the development at 1515 9th Street NW, which exceeded the minimum threshold for affordable housing units for this type of development. He believes that increasing the availability of affordable housing is essential for the well-being of our community. Steven will continue to push developers to provide affordable housing units in new constructions and advocate with the DC Council to fully fund programs that support affordable housing initiatives.

Addressing Homelessness

Steven understands the interconnectedness of homelessness and the lack of affordable housing in DC When an individual experiencing homelessness was identified in our community, Steven partnered with Miriam's Kitchen to get them the support they needed. He recognizes the importance of providing comprehensive support services to help those experiencing homelessness transition into stable housing. Steven will continue to advocate for programs that address the root causes of homelessness and provide the necessary resources for individuals to rebuild their lives.

Advocating for Accessible Housing

Steven supports government programs that make housing accessible and affordable, eventually opening up pathways to homeownership. He understands that stable, affordable housing is a foundation for a thriving community and believes in creating opportunities for residents to transition from renting to owning their homes. By advocating for policies that support this transition, Steven aims to ensure that all residents have access to safe and affordable housing.

Through his dedicated efforts, Commissioner McCarty has shown a steadfast commitment to supporting affordable housing, addressing homelessness, and promoting accessible pathways to homeownership. His proactive approach and strong advocacy ensure that our community remains inclusive, supportive, and accessible for all residents.
